The Magnitude of Food Adulteration in India

Published

on

We all are dying a slow death. We are all concerned about food inflation, rising petrol prices, government’s performance and everything that is happening around us, but will we even care if we are told that what we buy and eat every day is slowly poisoning our body and we are paying for the same. The reference is being made to the concept of Adulteration and the use of harmful pesticides in all the food that we consume.

In March on basis of a report, the Delhi High Court observed that it was ‘alarmed’ by the findings that stated alarming levels of harmful pesticide residues in food content consumed daily by the people of Delhi. Headed by Justice BD Ahmed, the bench had asked the Delhi government to set up a ‘Pesticides Residue Management Cell’ under the control of the Food Commissioner, within four weeks.

This problem is widespread and increasing because the citizens do not really care. Be it addition or removal of a politician or murder in the neighborhood, we are always up for some rally. But this slow murder of our near and dear ones hasn’t lead to any raising of voices as such. We put so much pressure on the bureaucrats and politicians when something goes against us. But have me taken out time to do something to check this very dangerous menace?

Adulteration is like a behind-the-scenes-killer and we are allowing it to happen. Lets us think this through. Are we okay in feeding our children synthetic milk which contains urea, caustic soda and vegetable oil, or an ice cream containing washing powder?

Who is to be blamed for Adulteration? The person doing it or the society allowing him to do it. Yes, if someone is caught, he is sent to the jail for three years after being in a trial for 10-15 years or so. What’s he got to lose given the gains? When was the last raid you head off to check food adulteration? What have the authorities been doing? Why aren’t the raids held daily/ weekly? What is stopping them? Unless the public puts pressure on the authorities, take the streets to force the government to act, there will be no action. The irony is that even the authorities and politicians face the same problem. But nobody cares!

To bring in some awareness, some of the food and the Common Adulterants used in them:

Butter: Anatta is added for the yellow tinge. Oleomargarine, a byproduct of beef fat is also added in large quantities.

Cream: Gelatine and formaldehyde, to increase shelf life.

IceCream: Washing powder is added to add volume

Milk, Paneer, Khoya: Urea, Starch and washing powder

Turmeric: Metanil and Yellow colored chalk powder, aniline dyes, wood powder.

 Coriander Powder: Wood Powder

Red Chilli Powder: Red color dye, Sudan Red III color, and brick dust.

 Mustard: Argemone seeds

Spice Powder: Barn is added along with synthetic colors.

Cinnamon Bark: Cassia Bark.

Cumin Seeds: Grass seeds colored with charcoal

Pulses like Moong, chana: Lead Chromate is added on a regular basis. Kesari dal is added to Besan and yellow dal.

Tea: Iron filings, colored tea leaves

 Coffee: Chicory

Wheat Flour: Chalk powder, barn dust, and sand.

Confectionary: Colours that have a harmful effect on the body are added to confectionary items that children consume on a regular basis and they include copper, Prussian blue, arsenic compounds, chrome yellow etc.

Vegetables: Copper salts are added to color the vegetables with green.

Vegetable Oils: Castor oil, Mineral oil, Argemone oil, Kranaja oil.

Even if after reading the above someone goes back to their usual life, then the adulterer cannot be blamed for his criminal act on our near and dear ones as we are the ones allowing them to get away with it.
